Helen Schoelzel Obituary

Helen Elenore Schoelzel

October 9, 1929 – August 7, 2016

Helen Eleanore Schoelzel went home to be with the Lord on August 7, 2016.  She passed away at her daughter and son-in-law’s home with her husband Robert J. Schoelzel, Sr, daughter Robie Anderson, son-in-law Robert Anderson and caregiver Candy Ortiz.

Helen was born Helen Eleanore Hauki in Lahaina, Maui to Eleanor Hauki and Frank Neizman.  She was one of three girls.  Her sister’s names are Jenny and Evelyn Neizman, and brother Harrison Neizman.   All three siblings predeceased her.

Helen grew up as a fisherman’s daughter.  Her mother fell ill with tuberculosis when Helen was around 13 years old.  She helped her father with fishing and earning money for the family and put food on the table also took over the job of raising her two sisters as her Mom was deathly ill and in Kula Sanitorium.   Helen loved the Hawaiian Islands and enjoyed hula, singing and playing the Ukulele.

Helen met my father Robert J. Schoelzel, Sr., when her brother Harrison took him home for dinner as he served in the Coast Guard on Maui.  They started dating and fell in love and were married on Feb 27, 1950. They had a beautiful marriage of 68 years that resulted in 4 children.  They lived in the Hawaiian Islands for four years until he was transferred back to Texas.  Helen wanted to become a nurse and went to The University of Texas and became a nurse in 1964.  She loved her job very much and enjoyed caring for others.  She went on to further her education and became a Hospital Administrator and then a Administrator of a 450 bed Convalescent Hospital in the mid 70’s. Helen had a devastating heart attack at age 58 and had to give up her nursing career she loved so much.

Helen lived with her husband Robert in Palm Desert, CA and having a devastating stroke in 2011 she and her husband decided that they best move in with their daughter Robie and her husband Robert Anderson.  Helen’s husband Robert took care of her up unto that time of them moving to Johnson City, TX. Helen and Robert loved to live in the country and watch the wildlife through the windows.  Helen just loved animals so much that they made her happy.  She spent her time with her family watching tv, listening to music and singing until being placed into home hospice care where she passed away on August 7, 2016.

Helen is survived by daughter Robie Anderson and husband Robert Anderson, son Robert J Schoelzel, Jr,  daughter Debra L. Quotes my Mother liked:  Caring people help others not because they expect a reward, but because it is natural to show kindness. Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.  One kind word can changes someone’s entire day.
